This captivating gallery proves that dolls are more than just child’s play. Ranging from representational to abstract, from skillful realism to provocative surrealism, Juror Akira Blount, a pioneer in the “art doll” movement, presents unique creations from artists around the globe. See Dutch artist Marlaine Verhelst’s porcelain puppets, Chris Chomick and Peter Meder’s slightly dementa automata, and more.
Akira Blount has been designing and making dolls and figures since 1969, and is one of the major figures who helped elevate the doll from trivial toy to art object. As an educator, she has promoted and encouraged experimentation and innovation in the field. She is president of the National Institute of American Doll Artists, and her work is displayed in museum collections worldwide—including the Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and the White House Collection of American Craft.
