| School Raku Firing Services
Seattle Pottery Supply has a wonderful raku firing service where we bring the exciting glazing and firing experience of Raku pottery right to your school site. Glazed ceramic bisqueware is heated until the glazes mature (approximately 1750º Fahrenheit) then removed from the kiln and placed in a sealed container containing straw or newspaper to make a reductive atmosphere that produces unique irridescent colors unattainable through other means.
We have a complete raku glazing and firing set up where we bring in and set up two or three of our special Crucible Easy Riser-tm raku kilns, and we show kids how to glaze their own ceramic pre-fired bisque pieces. We can even can supply bisqueware that students can personalize and fire if you do not have ready-to-fire pieces yourself.
While students are glazing their pieces, they can watch us bring up the temperature of kiln at a safe distance (at least 10 feet away) and the can observe the entire flux and reduction process as we help explain what's happening and get an inquistive problem-solving and creative dialogue going. Allow at least 4 hours for the entire process.
It's a wonderfully rich, interdisciplinary "real world" experience that mixes artistic, scientific, mathematical, and cultural "learning moments" with lots of pleasing and tangible results. This service is limited to the Greater Seattle/Puget Sound region (within a 50 mile radius from our facility). For more details, please call us at: (206) 587-0570,
